Entering fourth semester in degree marks the beginning of our final year project (FYP). Thus, the journey of collecting data and literature reviews begins. I was placed under Dr. Azlin Ahmad, as my supervisor and we discussed about a possible project. It has been decided that the chosen topic will be “Data Analytics in Football”. As the title describe, the techniques that will be implemented in this project will include both, predictive and descriptive analytics, and the domain shall be football, specifically European top five leagues.

While developing a project is the most vital step, it is also important to document every findings and progress that has been made in the process. In order to get this right, the first chapter of the thesis should be the project formulation, where necessary questions are asked and answered. In this chapter, the problems are identified through research, and the questions are listed. The objectives of this project are identified based on the problems that exists, and the expected outcome of this project.

In chapter 2, all literature and research papers are recorded and studied. The reviews includes the selected techniques, domain and various methods that were used to solve the problems such as statistical analysis and machine learning technique. It is important to review the methods and results used by each researchers, so that it would be the guideline to what this project should give by the time of its completion.

Design and development takes place in chapter 3, where the project is designed in order to fulfill the objectives. During development, it is crucial to take note of the progress so as to keep track of the pace of the development. The progress of this project is presented to the supervisor every Wednesday evening. Hence, every week is as important as the final week, where we are supposed to have a working and functioning prediction system.
